The final milestone -- an intersection sign lets me know I've reached the top of Flattop Mountain, 12,324 feet high.
Often on hikes, the top is the place to relax, enjoy views and maybe a picnic. But the rocky desolate landscape here feels inhospitable to life, and I can't stay long. An intense icy wind blasts continuously (with no other mountains to block it) -- and even with coat & gloves, my fingers are numb and useless. The thin frigid air grabs at my hat and drains away any last remaining energy.

Other trails connect here, and more energetic (younger) hikers here tell me that continuing for just another 1.5 miles provides fantastic (and even higher) views from Hallett Peak -- but I have reached the absolute limit of my abilities today, and turn around while I still can.

Heading back down, I'll relax at an altitude with more trees, warmth and oxygen. Just one last moment to admire the vast open landscape and the Rockies all around me. My frozen fingers fumble with the camera as I promptly begin the descent.
