The water gets deeper in narrow sections like this, where this river has carved a deep channel in the sandstone cliffs over millions of years. Some hikers coming from the other direction say that it gets neck-deep in some areas -- but I didn't travel that far.

The cliff walls rise up more than 100 feet to the clear blue sky, and it's easy to hike for several hours in this interesting landscape. The complete trail is 14+ miles long one-way, and some hikers do this as a 2-day trip down from the top.(but most people only do a small section near the bottom, as I did today),

In areas where the riverbed is wider, the water is more shallow and has a rocky shore -- which is a good place for a self-portrait.
