Farther up river, we see several capybara, browsing on leaves and plants. These enormous rodents (the world's largest), can grow to over 4 feet long and well over 100 lbs -- and are a favorite food of the equally gigantic anacondas that live and hide here in the murky water. Capybara are semi-aquatic, and their webbed feet make them strong swimmers.

We dock our boat and begin a short trek through the jungle to Lake Sandoval. Some of the trail goes directly through the forest -- and an elevated boardwalk is here because this area is underwater for much of the rainy season.

A large variety of palm and other tropical trees reach up over the forest, and we hear insects buzzing, birds chirping and all the other sounds you would expect in a lush jungle like this.
