Chasm Lake Trail at Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado 2016
On this high mountain pass, I couldn't help wondering why cairns are needed here at all. Who built these? Why expend effort creating such heavy cairn piles on a trail this easy to see? Are these for the benefit of intrepid winter hikers -- when the trail is covered in a deep blanket of snow? It's freezing up here even in the summer. Does anyone ever hike here in the winter? There's no one around -- and my questions go unanswered.

Hiking trail at Strokkur Geyser, Iceland 2018
Elsewhere, on an overcast day at Iceland's most popular Geyser, a decorative cairn marks another seemingly obvious hiking trail -- but gets very little attention as most visitors are facing the other way to admire the erupting hot spring.
