Chasm Lake Trail @ Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado 2016
Other cairns are built so massively, it's easy to imagine them still standing here in 200 years (or 2000) -- unchanged. There's no practical way to date these, and time is meaningless to stones as old as the mountains.

Spooky Gulch Trail, Escalante, Utah 2015
Humans have been building cairns since before recorded history, and some could be thousands of years old -- maintained and repaired through the centuries by countless passersby. It's a curious connection between people that will never meet.

Was this built by some local hiker regularly walking these trails? Or a distant and long-gone traveler, passing here just once, ages ago? How many, like myself, have been guided by this cairn?
