Sept 14; It's a nice, cooler day today -- perfect for a big hike. I choose Black Lake; about 10 miles and 1400+ foot elevation gain, starting from the Glacier Gorge area of the park (near Bear Lake). This trail wastes no time in starting the climb up through a fragrant pine forest. I inhale deeply and begin the ascent.

Passing Alberta Falls (not pictured). These falls are probably very active in spring when the snow is melting from glaciers above, but not much happening now in the dry season. Every few miles on this trail, other trails lead off in other directions to other lakes, falls and mountains. The possibilities seem endless as I pick a direction and continue.

A Stellar-Jay sits on a branch near the trail (similar to a blue jay, but much larger).
