One last steep climb to the top to reach Black Lake (pictured). With steep rock walls surrounding it, this lake was probably formed by glaciers thousands of years ago. This was a challenging accomplishment -- having hiked up to 10,600 feet from the start (more than a 1400' elevation gain). I still have to hike back down, so I relax for a while, but don't stay too long.

Looking down from the lake, rocky streams branch out like fingers, feeding the other lakes passed earlier, as I begin the long, steep hike down.

I take one last picture and head down the stairs on this section of the trail, where other hikers are admiring the stream. Hiking down is sometimes more challenging than up, so I put the camera away to concentrate on the return trip & footing. Clouds roll in and pelt me with hail for 5 minutes before clearing up again -- but otherwise nice weather the rest of the day.
This was a great (and strenuous) hike, nearly 10 miles and taking 7 hours (4 up, 3 down -- including all the sightseeing, snacks and breaks along the way of course).

[as calibrated here, 1 floor = about 12 feet elevation gain, 2700 steps = about 1 mile]
