My legs feel sluggish and my energy has drained away in the thin, high-elevation air. This last section of trail seems to go on forever through the barren landscape & open frozen tundra. I slowly lift each heavy leg for another hour striving for the top, while stopping more and more frequently to gasp at the thin air every few steps. My strength is gone; but willpower drives me onwards (plus maybe some snacks & chocolate). I'm carrying plenty of water, but the intense sun and dry cold wind parches my face & skin. Flattop Mountain is true to its name, and is flat on top; where I can see other hikers. I summon my last remaining strength and head towards them. < Can't see them? Click the photo for help >.
