Looking down the trail on the return provides a nice view of the river and the valley below.

By the way, this island country was formed and shaped by the many volcanoes here, and volcanic lava rocks can be seen everywhere. Some are glassy and black, others are gray, red or white, and many are full of holes from gases expanding while the rock was still molten.

Did I mention the river crossing at the start of this hike? Same crossing coming back -- and it's a bit of a bottle-neck as other hikers edge across the 'bridge'. Part of the crossing requires stepping on rocks submerged about an inch under the surface of the water. There's no way around slow or nervous hikers, and you have to wait for opposing 'traffic' too -- but it's worth the wait. This was a very fun hike (about 3-4 hours), and if you only have time for 1 waterfall hike in Iceland, I recommend this one.
