The next morning, on the advice of a hotel staff member, I head north on road 518 for about an hour to visit Hraunfossar Barnafoss in the Borgarfjörður region. He provides a map, and says it's worth the visit.

Tourism in Iceland is still relatively new, so guidebooks don't always have complete information -- but local knowledge is always the best, and the staff at this hotel was very helpful. Other than a few sheep and farms along the drive, there is absolutely nothing else in this area -- but very scenic; and it's a nice sunny day today.

As I continue to try to understand the language, I begin to realize that any name with "foss" or "fossar" generally means "water" or "waterfall", and there is a lot of that here.

I arrive at Hraunfossar Barnafoss to find a very scenic area with nice walking paths and a small restaurant. Water flows from the volcanic landscape into the Hvítá River -- which has a cloudy blue color typical of melted glacier water.
