It's estimated that it took about 90 years to build Machu Picchu -- with the early work done by Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui, the ninth ruler of the Inca (look at the lower levels of the house through the window to see the quality of his work). Later work (the upper parts of the buildings) was probably done by his son, Túpac Inca Yupanqui, and used a more 'rustic' style of stonework. These two styles can been seen throughout the site -- with the newer work on top. A wood and thatch roof would have been tied to the cylindrical stone 'pegs' at the roofline.
