The Inkaterra lodge grounds are lush and tropical, and guests enjoy private cabanas on the grounds. The lodge provides a wide variety of day-trips and guided excursions from here.

I take a picture of the room (and my feet) as I relax in the hammock, perfect for warm afternoon naps. The room is screened, but otherwise open to the outside, and electricity powering the ceiling fan and a single outlet is turned off during certain times of the day & late night to help preserve the environment (this lodge has an emphasis on 'eco-tourism' and sustainability).

Agouti can be seen everywhere on the hotel grounds, foraging for fruits and nuts. These shy rodents weigh about 4-8 pounds -- so imagine a supersized squirrel with virtually no tail. They're very alert -- since snakes, jungle cats, caiman and a variety of other rainforest predators want to eat them. The agouti is one of the few animals that can chew through the hard shell of a brazil nut.

After dinner, the lodge offers an evening river excursion to see caimans (pronounced "kaymens", a relative of the alligator), night birds and other nocturnal animals. I didn't take pictures (hard to do in the dark), but I'll be up early tomorrow for more river exploring.
