 Saturday; Sept 14. The hotel staff provides a 'wakeup' call with a knock on the cabana screen door around 5:30am -- and boats leave at 6am sharp for the morning excursion. Animals here get up early -- and so must we if we want to see them. There are no roads here -- the river is the only way to get around as we depart on this hot, hazy morning. Other boats motor up and down the river; some from other lodges, along with smaller fishing boats and commuters. We're told there are also illegal gold miners and poachers here, and the hotel (along with others) is trying hard to reduce that (but with vast areas of land and minimal law enforcement, it's difficult).
